The Department of Architecture at the College of Engineering and Information Technology at the university organized a scientific visit for students of the third-level architecture department to the historical city of Shibam Kawkaban, within the framework of the UAE University’s keenness to link the theoretical side with the practical side and to provide students with skills and knowledge through practical applications, accompanied by Prof. Yasser Al-Nadish, assistant faculty member in the department, head of the Student Activities Department, Ms. Sahar Al-Kahlani, and the administrative coordinator of the College of Engineering, Mr. Waseem Maasar.

During the visit, the students learned about the strategy of architectural preservation in the way of rebuilding (Bab al-Hadid and Qal’at al-Qishla - Kawkaban), which was demolished and sabotaged as a result of its bombing, and the options for architectural preservation by restoration and reuse (abandoned historical buildings in Kawkaban), and alerting the errors of architectural intervention using modern materials and techniques and cement mortar. Reconstruction of the collapsed walls through guesswork or making changes that are not compatible with the character and building pattern of the historical landmark (the Old Mosque - Kawkaban).

The students were also acquainted with the methods of conscious dealing with the architectural heritage by adding new spaces for a historical landmark in harmony with the spirit of the original building, and the forced structural intervention in the way of “consolidation and consolidation” through modern construction materials “roof supports and supports of solid bricks and iron”; It is resorted to in the most necessary cases (such as in the southern portico - the Great Mosque of Shibam), as well as clarifying the basics of architectural diagnosis of historical buildings and the problems they suffer from and threaten their safety (the outer walls of the Great Mosque - Shibam).

The students were also acquainted with the most prominent landmarks located in the vicinity of the Great Mosque in Shibam, including the brokerage and the entrance to the old Shibam, and the most prominent features of visual distortion of historical cities by introducing modern elements into cities, especially in the vicinity of historical buildings.
